Manufacturing consent (again) in Montalcino

The results of much-talked-about Brunello advisory council election came my way early this morning via my friend Ale’s feed. But as soon as they hit the Brunello producers association website, they were immediately blasted across the internets by observers of the Italian wine industry. I have posted the results at VinoWire together with the newly elected members’s professional affiliations (I cannot but applaud the Brunello producers association for posting the highly anticipated news promptly… for once!).

For years, Rivella has advocated a change in appellation regulations that would allow up to 15% of grapes other than Sangiovese in Brunello di Montalcino.

In a genuine act of sixteenth-century “self fashioning,” ex-director of behemoth producer Banfi and the self-proclaimed architect of the Montalcino renaissance is about to publish an English translation of his memoir: Montalcino, Brunello, and I: the Prince of Wines’ True Story [sic and sick].

Don’t get me started on elections in Italy… but as they say “ogni cane ha il padrone che si merita.” It is true that rumour has Rivella as the favoured candidate (with FB vice pres as you surely know) but even if he is elected President he will only be able to propose DOCG appellation changes that will then be subject to approval or voting by the Consorzio members. Less than two years ago (October 2008) 96% of producers voted publically in favour of retaining the 100% Sangiovese. As Marco says, the problem isn’t changes being made to the disciplinary, but rather ensuring that the disciplinary as it stands is respected in its entirety.

    This result is pretty clearly indicating the way the Consortium will move next. Personally I am so sad and already can feel the bitterness of the future in my mouth.
    They will spoil our heritage.
    They will take the future away from small producers.
    They will play a game that I don’t want to play.

    Horay to Mr. Biondi Santi and his legacy! Respect for the tradition (the TRUE one, NOT the pretended!).
    Today is not a good day.
    Tomorrow will be worst.
