Carema marvelous!

I don’t have time to write up my notes from a marvelous visit to the village of Carema, Piedmont yesterday but quickly threw together this slideshow. Pergola-trained Nebbiolo carved into the mountain… amazing!

Special thanks to friend and colleague Maurizio Gily who organized and led the trip and to Viviano Gassino, president of the Cantina dei Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema, who gave us a tour of the winery and led a vertical tasting stretching back to 1987.

  1. Thank you Jeremy to help the world to know the mountain vineyards, the “stone vine garden” of Carema, a real humanity heritage. Stone walls, terraces, trials and stairs were built along centuries, all by hand. And the vineyards are managed all by hand even today. No way to push a tractor over a narrow stone stair … Unfortunately this unique landscape is under threat. The wonderful Carema wine, one of best sons of the Nebbiolo grape, is not so wellknown on the market to encourage these farmers to go ahead with so a hard job. So, please, drink Carema! You’ll help to leave this incredible beauty to our sons and grandsons. And, by the way, you will drink very, very well at reasonable price!

  2. Very jealous of your visit to Carema. I am very curious to hear/read your impressions on a wine which I adore. Any Nebbiolo lover should get to know these wines if he/she does not already. Shameless plug to read more about a recent post about Carema and Produttori’s.
