Say it ain’t so: reporter claims that Banfi’s 03 Brunello contains grapes other than Sangiovese

Ne nuntium necare. I’m really sorry to report that, according to at least one Italian news service, Banfi’s 03 Brunello contains grapes other than Sangiovese. Read our post at VinoWire and for those of you who speak Italian, read Franco’s post.

I’m in Montalcino as I write this and I am speechless. Non ho parole. This sucks.

Jeremy, the QN-La Nazione article textually said: “Ieri sono arrivate sul tavolo della Procura della Repubblica di Siena le prime circostanziate relazioni sulle consulenze chimico biologiche affidati nei primi giorni dello scorso maggio ad un laboratorio di Asti. Le analisi depositate riguardano al momento solo il vino sequestrato a suo tempo nell’azienda Banfi, a Montalcino. I consulenti del procuratore, secondo indiscrezioni, confermerebbero le ipotesi investigative: gli accertamenti avrebbero infatti accertato l’impiego di uve diverse da quelle previste dal disciplinare”. Is not totally clear if this first test results establish that Banfi Brunello is not correct. The article seem to affirm this…

  3. This has been brewing for awhile. Now, we have some confirmation (officially). I hope it isn’t true. Truth in labeling is extremely important. Was it done, I wonder, to increase quantity bottled or to affect ratings? Whether the blended wine is better or not, the label should be truthful…always.
