The 2004 Brunello from Banfi is the best Brunello that they have ever made. I first tasted the wine in January of 2009 in NYC. The wine surprised me so much that I went back and tasted it 3 more times from different bottles. I only had positive comments to make about it. It seemed to me that it was 100% sangiovese and that it had all the best qualities of a good Brunello

@Tom thanks for the kind words.

@Franco thanks for sharing these notes. I definitely got that same green note, but more in the finish. The wine had been open all day in Tracie B's wine bag and I believe some of the aggressiveness had begun to mellow (after a day of being presented at multiple accounts, I would guess, in and out of her car, in the Texas heat). The wine was fine with a simple home meal but $65 a bottle? That's obscene for a wine like this. As a mutual friend of ours (and Sangiovese veteran) noted to me privately, it's the first Banfi Brunello that tastes like Sangiovese. I hadn't tasted a Banfi wine in years but I had to admit that it didn't offend me...

Jeremy, herewith my tasting notes about Brunello 2004 I wrote in blind tasting of 93 Brunello di Montalcino 2004 in London (September 10-11): unclean aggressive, extractive, green notes on the nose the palate is rich, with a good length and richness solid tannic structure, but the final is not perfectly balanced with some dry, astringent, bitter notes maybe still very young" Score: 14/20
